I just checked out a particular item on the marketplaces…. a particularly cool logo reveal.

I noticed that the first comment was a rather critical review by another author. It set me thinking. A negative comment, especially right at the top of the item discussion could easily sow the seeds of doubt and prevent that buy impulse at the last moment. The first few hours and days of an item’s life on the marketplace are critical and such a comment could be detrimental to sales.

I’m all in favour of honest discussion, but ultimately this is a market place. If an author wishes to invite frank, open discussion and criticism about an item, then the Item Discussion forum is the right place. I also think that a culture of negative commenting developing could encourage deliberate placement of negative energy in competitor products. There are plenty of items on the market place that IMHO are somewhat less than stellar, but there’s no need to go round leaving a comment on each one saying so…. they just get less comments over all.

So I suggest that we authors stick by a code of conduct regarding comments on other authors’ items that they have spent a lot of time and energy making…. leave a nice positive comment if you want, otherwise don’t comment at all.

Thoughts?

I totally agree with everything you say and i am sure you are in favor of constructive criticism as long at it is positively brought also.

Maybe some people don’t mean it negative but have a language barrier to overcome. (i know a few myself that have this problem) But never the less i strongly agree with staying as positive as possible when commenting since those first few words weigh heavily on any particular file in it’s early days.

I am living by this code since i started out on VH tbh, i try to show my support as much as possible and also very rarely when i feel like it i try to be honest and give criticism but never leaving a negative mood.

And yes, we have to do everything we can to avoid develop a trend that could take us to deliberate negative comments on competitor’s products, it would be a shame really if it would come to that since i really enjoy this place because everyone is like friends here, marketplace or not, there isn’t a place anywhere on the net like videohive regarding the awesome behavior :)

+ 1, some dudes here def need such an obvious lesson of good manners, and that ‘code of conduct’ must be stuck in the forum, added to Envato Wiki and asked in the new user’s quiz… And let’s implement a penalty up to $100… ;)

I don’t want to point any fingers… it’s just a general discussion prompted by a particular example.

I don’t spend all day reading all comments of all authors. In fact, I fairly rarely do. It just so happened that I chanced upon one today and started the thread.

Well actually i said this just because you are one of the most respectable people at the marketplace and your words count a lot

I am happy for this thread and also for your opinion about negative comments.

Ah, yes, I do know what mean, felt.

I think the language barrier is a major hurdle here, with authors and buyers alike being from all over the world. Sometimes what is meant to be a constructive thought is misconstrued as negative criticism.

An item’s comment section, no matter what, really is no place to add your own thoughts as to how you would improve the animation or make it better, nor is it a good venue to talk about specific aspects of the animation that you don’t like.

As a general rule, if one author has constructive criticism, suggestions or advice for another author’s animation, they should contact that author via email, not through the comments section.

Leave the comment section for the buyers who have questions and for other authors who simply want to leave a short kudos.
