I’ve had several of my customers recommend MODx (http://modxcms.com) and I know a few have converted my HTML templates to run on it. I’m tinkering around with it now but was curious what you (the Envato community) thought of it.

I used MODx a few months ago it’s very flexible an the templating system is very easy, you should give it a try
Hi Parallelus, As one of your customers who have ported your ‘unite’ theme to MODx all I can say is it is THE BUSINESS – (the theme and the CMS ) if you know your mark up you can do all you want and more with the MODx system (and quickly too). Blog, Search, custom templates etc. etc. and all easy for customer to use – and SECURE !
I’m looking forward to see if anyone else out there in the Envato community has any thoughts…
Cheers AL.
I used MODx and I like it. Wrote a module for it, very easy to use
Looks like I may have to give this a serious look!
Buyers: Would a CMS like this in a thene be a big factor for choosing one template over another which doesn’t make use of it?

So far the main problem I’ve found is every page must specify a “template” or HTML layout. If you decide to switch theme’s you must change the assignment of every content page, I sure hope there is an automated way to do this.
The issue I see here is it prevents users from easily switching their design with existing content. Unless I missed something, and if I did PLEASE let me know because I might stop looking at this system right now if that is how it really works. With a limitation like this I don’t see a future for MODx as a “theme platform”. I hope I’m wrong because that seems like a serious design flaw to me. I know another CMS that uses a very similar structure which I also believe will never get as big as it should because of this exact issue.
I’m not a particularly big fan of WordPress (it’s ok), but this is a key factor in it’s success.
Hey Parallelus – fear not!! As usual with MODx it is easy to achieve what you want.
Whilst not a ‘one click’ solution like WP it is really easy to change a whole site to one new template or specify which pages get changed – are you running an installation on wamp/mamp or on a test site?
If so, log in and go to : modules>doc manager. you should be presented with the ‘change template’ manager page.
All the instructions are there, and there is a heap of flexbility.
Say you wanted to change an entire site to a new theme/template – just check the template radio button for the template you require, then enter – 1 * * – 1 being the home page and * * being all its children – into the entry box – hit submit and bingo! new looking site.
If you read the instructions below the entry box you will see some examples of variables.
Any questions let me know.
!! this is for MODx EVO 1 .04!! if you are running the new super duper REVO 1 release stay alert for some BIG template/theming news!!!!
Cheers AL.

Thanks I’ll check that out.
I am running MODx Revolution 2.0.0. I see they had another release today “v2.0.2”. Seems like they’re very actively developing this version. I can’t wait to hear the big template/theming news. I’d love something that as easy to toggle designs as WordPress but provides more control over the site and development.
I saw my Unite theme you converted to MODx. That looks great. I’ll probably build a site for myself with this just to get a good feel for it and completely test it out. Do you have a good link for MODx news and announcements that I can use to stay updated?
i don’t use modx because i don’t like his website
yes i’m a little bit stupid
We would like to see some themes available for ModX. We noticed when we started browsing themeforest that the concentration is on HTML and Wordpress templates iwth a smattering of Joomla and Drupal (we have not worked with drupal but the few Joomla templates appear to be very high quality). Of course most html templates can be ported over to Modx although it can take a great deal of time. But templates actually ported over would be wonderful. Hopefully themeforest will give some consideration to this category.
