Hi guys, i need some help about a freelance job proposal i received. This guy wants me to compose for him some custom ambient tracks and i’ll be very glad to do it (this is my first freelance job offer). Anyway my question is: should i write a personal license for those kind of situations? Where could i get a license that i can send him? In the end, how should i protect myself in this kind of situation?

Another question is: he asked me to edit some of the tracks i have here on audiojungle to fit his project, how can i sell him those tracks? Could i send them privately just like a freelance job? That’s about quite big edits, so the track would be quite different from the one i have here.

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Here’s my advice, which you should take with a pinch of salt and amke your own final decision on.

Whatever you do, and I’m sure you know this, don’t give away your ownership/copyright. Only license the tracks. If your client wants exclusive usage (or time limited, say 5 years) they need to pay a lot more as you will be restricting your income on those tracks in the future.

For the edits – you’ll be charging for the service – they’ll need to purchase the tracks through the normal AJ channels.

I’m no expert on this subject or offer any real help, but a similar question regarding freelance composing was raised a few months ago by James of Sweetwaveaudio here.

I can’t seem to find any information in the forums here regarding composer contracts and licensing out tracks externally when working on a freelance basis. And probably for very good reason. It’s not a light subject and not something that can be easily answered in a couple of lines.

Take a look at these example composer agreements I found after a quick Google search. This is the kind of thing you’d be dealing with and you will quickly see that there are a whole range of agreements needed for different situations when placing your music and creating custom work for a client.

Unfortunately these things are often laden with law and copyright terms and conditions (It’s similar to my freelance design contracts I use in my design business). And then there’s the whole grey area of editing and reselling preexisting exclusive AJ tracks – something I’m not too knowledgeable in. And then of course there’s the question of how much to charge.

Personally, I think it’s probably worth speaking directly with some of the top authors here, as they’ve no doubt already had a wealth of experience in this area. I’ve heard that Tim McMorris is very helpful with advice, etc, so you could drop him a quick message, I’m sure he’d be more than happy to help. Otherwise an evening on Google may do the job! :)

Or even better, someone could join in and help answer this right here!? ;)
