Well, to be honest, I just found out I’m going to be moving house soon, which means that I’ll be in need of a lot of new stuff (new furniture for my room, such like that) so obviously that means I can’t spend all my money on an iMac like I planned.

I’m thinking of currently, for a few years or so, just sticking with the computer I have and just upgrading the memory, HDD and getting a new monitor, so here are the ones I’ve found:

Current: 320GB HDD
New: 1TB HDD

Current: 4GB DDR2 Crucial RAM @ 444MHz
New: 4GB Kingston RAM DDR2 @ 1066MHz (Top of the range)

Current: Triple Core AMD Phenom III X3 2 .3GHz Processor
New: AMD Phenom II X4 940 3 .0GHz Processor

Current: Stock 1024×1280 Monitor
New: LG 23 ” HD Gaming Monitor

Do you think this is a good setup and a good idea?

Edit: just spotted we have had this conversation before! Didn’t notice because I’m sure you have changed your icon recently!

iMac.

As a quick answer!

But it’s a pricey jump and if your current machine (PC I assume?) is handling your work OK at the moment then upgrading bits of it might just get you the extra boost you need without shelling out a fortune on an iMac.

I’ve literally just been through a similar thing and, although I haven’t had the financial constrant on moving house, I decided to jump in the deep end and buy a 27” iMac Quad 2.8ghz i5 – expensive but the other option of sticking with a PC just seemed so depressing.

This is my first work mac (we have a little MacBook I used to use to design on) and the difference between this and my work PC is ridiculous – it is unbelievably fast, responsive and reliable in comparison!

If I’ve misunderstood your question and you are actually upgrading an iMac and not a PC then I would recommend that over buying a new one for now – especially when those costs of moving house start to rack up! >.<

My opinion and safest bet, upgrade in this order: Ram, Monitor, [Graphics card?], Processor, HDD . – least that is what I would do. :)

Well Jack,

Also, I’ve seen over in Britain, you can get a 21.5inch 500GB for the same price as if you get an 27inch 1TB in America? (Around same price), would it be better getting one from Britain or America and importing it?

America, if you want to import – beware of tax/customs.

The price difference is just stupid >.< but you can’t beat the feeling of actually going into an Apple store and buying one right there and then and letting the Apple shop employees wheel it to your car!
