Currently we require that business cards just have a bleed, but we don’t specify which size. It seems like the standard bleed sizes are 1/8in (US) and 3mm (everywhere else). I’m guessing it sucks when you’re in the UK and end up buying a card that uses the US standards.

  1. Buyers, has this ever been an issue for you?
  2. Do you think it would be beneficial to require both bleed sizes?
  3. Authors, How much extra work would this be?
  4. Do buyers ever email you to find out what bleed size you’re using?
  5. Do you think this would improve customer satisfaction and, in turn, sales?

Just recently one buyer ask me to change bleed size for her. It wasnt to much job, just create same document with deifferent bleed size and copy/paste in place everything else :)

Hey Lance,

I set the majority of indesign files with a 3mm bleed, and as of yet nobody has had an issue.

1/8 in (0.125 in) means approximately 3.1 mm.

I’m not a print guy. Does a .1mm difference matter? Will some printers send it back if it’s mm vs. in?

As long as most of my printing items are in inches unit, I use 1/8 inch. And I haven’t received any request from buyer to change the bleed size yet :) .

That’s not even a hair thick, so absolutely no. If a printer ever sends a template back because of such difference, to put it mildly…they simply need to give their profession’s license back. And fast. lol
