Recently my business card was soft rejected because of use of fictional brand. Apparently we can only use placeholders like “your logo”, “your company” or “business name” and etc. to prevent potential copyright issues.

NOTE this is not rejection complaint thread. I have fixed my item and it is totally ok with me. I just want to make clear some questions and see others opinions. I think that authors and marketplace can benefit from allowing using some fictional brand names that are made of common words and there are no such company found with a fast Google search.

How it will benefit? Previews with some realistic branding looks much more appealing and professional, and also helps buyer to visualize how this template will look with some real brand name resulting in higher sales.

THE MAIN QUESTION IS HERE

So is there any chance that in future we will be allowed to use some general fictional brand names like “Old Elm Bookstore”, “Joe’s Books” or something like that? I have seen some printing service providers selling templates with some fictional branding in previews? So maybe it is OK to do that?

I guess there should be no legal issues unless we use some real and well established brands. Can Envato staff dig deeper in it and find if it is OK to allow usage of some fictional branding or maybe come up with some sort of safe list containing a few general brand names for different industries?

Would anyone like to use some fictional branding instead of boring and dull “Business Name” in previews?

Does this make any sense; I’m not sure about my English

There can be one solution to this. You are not allowed to use copyrighted material in original files but you can use them in preview. I think you can do the same thing with branding, right? I’m not sure if this works 100% but you can try it. Just use some fictional branding in the preview of your file and let the original file contain the dummy text.

Nice idea. Thanks. Hope some officials will clarify this question.

No problem. Don’t know if anyone from staff would answer this as it’s a sensitive matter but as long as I know, since the update of the guidelines or whatever, authors are responsible for anything they keep in preview.
