this might start off in a rant but it is only because I’m am now at my wits end so bare with me… I’m a nice guy really
here is the file I just submitted
poster/flyer A3 A4 A5 A6 in size
http://lickmystyle.com/skulls-demo.jpggets hard rejected with this
“1. An interesting concept however your file does not meet our current design standards.
Without the skulls the flyer looks simplistic and flat. Try playing more with the typography.
We already have plenty similar files with the same concept. We are looking for some more unique designs instead.”
not even a soft rejection.
Every file I submit has to have something done with the text…. yes I said text not typography…. just because we are designers the word typography doesn’t have to be used all the time
anyway why cant the text be left vanilla instead of having a style on it??? some of the best designs have plain basic formatted text just take a look around you. Shouldn’t what’s in the file and the format be enough sometimes? most poster/flyers use models which are not included in the download… all my files have everything inside them ready to go.
Why cant poster/flyers look simple and minimalistic on GR?
“Without the skulls the flyer looks simplistic and flat” it is meant to look simple and as for flat must every poster/flyer on GR look like stuff is flying out of explosion that only JJ Abraham would be proud of?
The part “We are looking for some more unique designs instead” err err so must all posters and flyers have at least one dove, one diamond and a microphone in them? oh I forgot the clouds… how could I forget the clouds.
It was once said on these forums that if you complain or give out you will never be featured and this is one of the reasons I have not said anything publicly on here until now but this is the last straw… shame really I would have liked a job with Envato (I’m being serious)
Anyway end of rant….. what do you think?
Such a long post! I have to say that I jumped the guns to write before i even finished reading. I agree with you about the “typography” I know people buy gradients, but come on. Flat is good. Most of the time it’s about 3 times better than the one with all the bevels and “chrome deserts”
I wrote a post about the same subject to the guys at support but I suppose they are busy with the celebrity raid at the moment
Design wise the coolest posters i have seen have been very simple typographic poster. and with typography I mean typography and not layer styles drop shadows etc…

Oh thank god that I am not alone… I think the focus is just on the text within each poster having some outrageous style on it to sell.
And yes the coolest posters are the simplest… also they are easiest to read, know what is going on, with who and where.
I do feel like a miss justice was done with rejecting this poster.
No injustice, the reviewer is correct imo.
If “Every file I submit has to have something done with the text”, maybe you should think “Hmmmm, there’s a common denominator here”
“Why cant poster/flyers look simple and minimalistic on GR?” – they can, you’re not being rejected because of your minimal design, you’re being rejected because of the typography.

Maybe you should try taking some of the advice onboard and then see if your item is accepted

what happened there Quickandeasy mate?
oh I did take it on board and disagreed with you
I dont want my work to be like the rest with overused styles just because I have to be accept… there has to be some give way.
and I think a hard rejection was a bit unfair if it is it only text style that is leaving it down
I may just be having a bad day
Fixing the typography issue isn’t about adding more ‘fx’ to your text, more styles etc, it’s about finding a better suiting font, laying the type out so it’s more visually pleasing and over, so it suits the rest of your design.
The title font choice does not agree (imo) with your design. The skulls etc are very well designed, then it’s all ruined with a bad font choice, you should at least try to fix it rather than telling the reviewer he is wrong

LOL I know what you are saying but that is something I disagree with you on and I see as your opinion (that is not said in a smart way) As I think the skulls and the text create an alternative look that is quite often used in lads mags today (I know I used to work for one and freenlance to others)
LOL , Dear I say, the font suits the design. It actually does, It’s playfull, a bit childish and kitch, like the “sugar crystal candy skulls” and the sticker is fine, there’s enough contrast with the rest of the design and at also follows the current trend leaning towards simple and a bit blatant “MS Office” aesthetics. Ask hipsters. Oh I forgot, they don’t talk.
We can argue about personal preferences or then you can just put your money where your mouth is and prove me wrong. Show me a free font that would fit the design better.
also don’t take me too seriously.
