Wordpress Advice as i have never used it!

Hey everybody

I have just upgraded my hosting so i can get more traffic and actually store some file on the sever for people to download,

I am want to get a wordpress theme for here for my site, I need it to pretty much have, Home, About us, services, gallery/portfolio, tutorials, freebies, contact us, and for it to have room for adverts, so if your files have these or could be modified to have these it would be great to hear you can contact me through my profile or post here and I will check out your gallery as links are normally not aloud.

If I like it I will get it today

My only real problem is I have never used wordpress or any thing, I have an app for easy installation with my hosting, but I don’t know how I would modify the site before I upload it to the web server.

I would appreciate any help or advice on the matter.

Hi,

well, basically any WordPress theme on sale here can do what you need. You won’t find one with the exact sections that you need, but be sure that with the available page templates you can achieve that.

Obviously you need to get familiar with WordPress to be able to use the themes at their best, don’t think that installing a theme you will have a site ready. Some basic skills are required, you can start to play with a free theme and then pick the right one for you here.

Going a step back, start by installing WordPress on your site (use the application available, will be very easy). Once installed log in into the admin and try to activate a free theme.

Basically the themes must be uploaded into the WordPress admin to be used, so you don’t have to edit the theme and then upload it. You will create the contents directly on line.

So, my suggestion is: install WP and play with it for a little bit. Themes here are premium and comes with many more features than free ones, so starting with a simpler theme is the best solution for you. Also if themes here come with an help file, if you are a very beginner the information you’ll find won’t be enough for you in most of the cases.

We authors offer free help and support, but obviously we can’t teach people how to use WP.

Said this, themes on TF are the best of the best, so once you will have some basic skills you won’t be disappointed by purchasing one of them.

Additionally, almost every theme here come with the option to install the demo contents, in order to easily recreate the theme preview you can see on the file page. This is very useful to see how all the contents have been created by the author and this can be very helpful to have a starting point.

I set up a sub domain on my site for installing wordpress for the moment so I can test it, i also installed the web app for the sub domain and have been given my wordpress login details.

do you know where I could get one to test out, it must me somewhere with reliable download as I read about most free wordpress being riddles with unwanted stuff?

Is it possible to to buy one and get started straight away would it be to hard I have done web design before and coding I just stopped about 4 years ago to do other things. or if it is not where would be the best place to get started so I have the knowledge.

So from what you said i just need to upload teh theme i get on to my site and all changes can be made from there?

you’re welcome.

I know that free themes are not the best You can for sure buy one theme here and get started with it (be sure that it comes with demo contents, that helps).

I suggested to start with a free theme just to get familiar with WP without spending money, but, if you don’t care, a premium theme is always better than a free one, especially bugs wise.

When you have a theme zip file, you just need to go into the “Appearance -> Themes” page of the WP admin and follow the instructions to install it. Once installed you only need to activate it and start to build your pages, you will create all the contents from the admin.

I remembered i have a theme i downloaded from here when it was free file of the month i could give that a go but it will be complex.

I was just wondering where would be the best place to get a free one to practice with, that is reliable and not dodgy. and also where would be the best place to find info on how to work with wordpress,

Hi,

try with that file you downloaded here, better to test WP with a premium theme if you have one (be sure is WP, not an html theme).
