Wordpress Plug-ins Hypothetical Question

You’re Johnny Utah… you’ve retired from the FBI because you want to be a surf bum for the rest of your life… However, you’ve decided being a surf bum doesn’t make a lot of money… so you’re also going to full fill your other life long passion, which is creating premium Wordpress plug-ins…

You open up for business, “Utah’s Surf and Premium Plug-in Shack”...

Now you’re competing with “Bozo’s FREE Plug-in Hut” down the street… which already offers thousands of FREE wordpress plug-ins. You don’t mind however, because you’re going to offer great quality plug-ins that people won’t mind dishing out a couple of dollars for… You’re going to create a huge range of premium plug-ins, from simpler to medium, to more complex… so the question is:

What’s you’re price scale/range/points to stay competitive? low/medium/high?

It all depends what a washed up FBI agent like Johnny Utah is trying to achieve and who his target market is.
Does he want to sell a larger volume at a lower price? Or not so many at a higher price?
What kind of clientèle does Johnny want? Beginners who’ll expect cheap prices and will most likely need good support or professionals who will be willing to pay more and can handle setting it up themselves?
Whatever the case Johnny is bound to do well if he keeps his plug-ins original, of good quality and has a good brand… as brand loyalty is quite often the key to keeping the clients coming (so they don’t go to his competitor “Bozo’s FREE Plug-in Hut” for their plug-in needs)

Well.. if you told Johnny Utah he was washed up… you might not see tomorrow… being the ninja, you might be able to get away quick enough… but others wouldn’t be so lucky…

To the point… I think there’s a whole bunch of hypotheticals you could throw in the mix… Most likely you’re going to have a huge range of buyers… those who value cost, and those who value quality… I guess Johnny Utah’s question is more of you’ve got to start some where… where do you start?...

It’s difficult to compete with big sites, especially the ones that are free. The independent sites that I see doing the best are the ones that pick a really big project, and make their entire site based around that single project. Then you can charge $49.95 and actually get people to purchase your product.

If it were me I’d start in the mid to low range (anywhere between $5-$30) and build up a loyal client base with smaller projects first, then release some larger more pricey ones when there’s a steady flow of clients.
Also from what I’ve seen elsewhere releasing a few free (good quality) plug-ins every now and then is a good way of getting your name out there and can really help attract potential clients.
But if you (or Johnny Utah, lol) are really serious about doing anything like this it’s always best to do some thorough research beforehand.

It completely depends what the plug-in does, I have no idea what kind of a plug-in you were wanting to create but the one you’re selling on Codecanyon is $9 and I’m pretty sure that for a simpler plug-in $5 is a reasonable price, if you’re wanting to sell it in bulk.
That’s why I said anywhere from $5 – $30 not just $5… lol, maybe you should get a mod to delete your message so you don’t look like you can’t read .

I’m just saying, even if it’s a simple little plug-in… yet better than any free one out there and worth putting a price on… at $5, how can anyone take that plug-in seriously, and still label it “Premium”?...

I think you do things free files don’t have… you provide good and kind support, you do video tutorials, you listen at your buyers

I have agreed with you whole heartily in everything you’ve said… especially that $5 is an acceptable price for a simpler premium plug-in… When attempting to provide my audience with the same reasonable accord to my item… I was met with the same resistance I showed you, from the Empire…

However, you’re voice… along with the millions of others who have marched behind you… have rattled the Empires walls… and like a Wal-Mart smiley face… our gracious king, has rolled back the price to something fair for all…
