I think I have seen templates with about 15 screenshots.
And I find it difficult to reduce the screenshots to 10.

I added 10 as the rules require on my last ( first ) item. It’s a bad idea to abuse the rules. Ask reviewers or staff before getting rejected for a simple reason as the screenshots!

I thought counting the screenshots is an automated process. 
Another confusing thing: The upload instructions say screenshots have to be JPEG , but when you go to upload a file, under the Theme Preview field it says:
ZIP file of images (png/jpg) w/ optional text descriptions for display on the site
I lost 180 seconds of my life I would never get back, converting PNG to JPEG

If you think you need more, create a Facebook fan page, name an album with your template name, and link it in the description, that way you can advertise your files, and make sure that if your server goes down, people can see a lot of screenshots of your item!
Also! If it would be an automated process you would probably automatically get rejected for having more than 10 files in your screenshots zip file. ( I’m not sure if it’s automated or not, but it would seem logic to have an auto fail if the item number exceeds the maximum )
